What to do.

Knocked out tooth.

Immediate treatment is required for the best chance of saving a tooth that has been knocked out.

  • Find the tooth
  • Handle it gently by the crown, not the root
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it quickly with water or milk, but do not scrub it
  • If possible, put the tooth back into its socket, holding it in place with a wet gauze
  • Otherwise, keep the tooth moist in your mouth against your cheek, or store it in a glass of milk
  • Seek urgent dental treatment

Severe toothache.

Often caused by advanced dental decay, symptoms of a toothache include a throbbing pain, tenderness and swelling of the surrounding area.

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce pain and swelling
  • Reduce pain with over-the-counter pain relief medication
  • Seek dental treatment promptly
